Fear is something every human faces. It shows up in our thoughts, our relationships, our work, and even in the way we dream about the future. But the truth is, fear isn’t always real – it often shows up as F.E.A.R: False Evidence Appearing Real.
When fear rises, we are given a choice. And in that choice lies the path of transformation.
Entering the G.A.P.
In coaching, I often describe the moment fear surfaces as stepping into the G.A.P. – God’s Automatic Purge. The GAP is that space between the fear that arises and the action you decide to take. It’s uncomfortable, vulnerable, and often revealing.
Why call it a purge? Because fear brings to the surface everything you’ve been carrying – your doubts, your limiting beliefs, your old stories. It forces you to face what is not aligned with the life you want to create. The GAP is an invitation: to do your work.
And here’s the key: no one can walk through that GAP for you. As a coach, I can guide and hold space, but the client must decide how they will respond.
The Work of Choice
Once fear is exposed, two paths appear.
-
On one side, F.E.A.R. means “Face Everything And Rise.” This is the path of the evolver, the seeker, the one who is willing to do the uncomfortable work of growth. Choosing this path doesn’t eliminate fear – t transforms it into fuel.
-
On the other side, F.E.A.R. becomes “Forget Everything And Run.” This is the path of avoidance, the choice to retreat into old patterns. It feels safe in the short term, but it keeps you revolving in the same cycles. That’s why I call this the path of the “revolver” and the non-seeker.
At the heart of it, the decision is always yours: Will you rise, or will you run?
Why This Matters in Coaching
Every coaching conversation eventually comes down to this choice. A client sits in the GAP, fear staring them in the face. Will they do the work, face their truth, and rise into a new version of themselves? Or will they run from the discomfort and miss the opportunity for transformation?
As coaches, our role is not to decide for them but to shine a light on the choice, to remind them of their power, and to hold them accountable to the life they say they want to live.
Final Thought
Fear will never disappear. But the way you relate to it can change everything. The GAP is sacred space – it’s where the old stories dissolve and new strength is born.
So next time fear appears, ask yourself: Am I about to run… or am I ready to rise?
