Is an endorsement from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the International Association of Coaching (IAC) required to become a Life Coach?
The short answer is no.
And honestly, this question comes up constantly, so let’s clear it up once and for all.
The coaching industry is still largely unregulated. That means anyone can declare themselves a coach without formal education or oversight. Wild, right? But it is true.

At Seattle Life Coach Training we take coaching seriously. We believe professional training, strong skills and ethical practice create safer and more effective coaching. Our program is built to give you everything you need to coach powerfully in real life, and our hours align with the requirements you would need if you ever choose to pursue an ICF credential later.
Let’s break it down in a simple way so you know what is optional and what is actually necessary.
Are ICF or IAC credentials required to become a coach?
No state or country requires ICF or IAC certification to practice as a Life Coach.
You can legally coach without holding any credentials from an external board.
These certifications are optional.
They can be helpful for some career paths.
They are not the deciding factor in whether you are a great coach.
What matters most is your skill level, your integrity and your ability to lead a powerful coaching session.
Understanding ICF Credentials
Seattle Life Coach Training offers more than 120 hours of training. This aligns with the training requirements that ICF asks for if you choose to apply for their credentialing pathway in the future.
To become an ICF member you need to complete at least 60 approved training hours and pay their annual membership fee (currently around $250 a year). Being a member is not a certification. It simply gives you access to their credentialing process if you want to pursue it.
Here are the ICF certification levels:
Associate Certified Coach (ACC)
• 60+ training hours
• 100+ hours of paid coaching experience
• Additional testing and fees required
Professional Certified Coach (PCC)
• 125+ training hours
• 500+ hours of paid coaching experience
• Additional testing and fees required
Master Certified Coach (MCC)
• 200+ training hours
• 2,500+ hours of paid coaching experience
• Additional testing and fees required
ICF focuses on training hours, coaching experience and passing their evaluation process.
Understanding the IAC
The International Association of Coaching takes a different approach.
The IAC cares less about the number of hours you collect and more about mastery demonstrated through testing and live coaching assessments.
They currently offer two levels:
Certified Masteries Coach (CMC)
Skill-based testing focused on coaching mastery.
Master Masteries Coach (MMC)
A more advanced level of demonstrated mastery.
IAC endorsements are based on proficiency and exams rather than hours.
So what is the best path for you?
This is where your intuition matters more than anything.
Ask yourself:
• What kind of coaching career do I want?
• Do I need an external credential for the type of coaching I plan to do?
• Or do I simply need strong, practical, real-world coaching skills?
For most coaches starting out, the most important step is completing a powerful training program. One that teaches real skills, real communication tools and an actual session structure you can use with clients.
That is why Seattle Life Coach Training exists.
We train you thoroughly.
We prepare you to coach in the real world.
We help you grow your confidence and your ability to transform lives.
And if you ever choose to pursue ICF or IAC credentials later, you already have the training hours needed to begin that process.
The bottom line
Being ICF or IAC certified does not automatically make you a better Life Coach.
A great Life Coach is great because of their skill set, emotional awareness, communication mastery and ability to guide clients through real transformation.
If you want to become a professional Life Coach, start with a training program that actually teaches you how to coach. Once you have that foundation you can decide if external credentials matter to you and your long-term career goals.
Seattle Life Coach Training gives you the tools, structure and confidence you need to step into the world and coach powerfully.
If the calling is there, start your training.
Your future clients are waiting.
